The future has arrived – almost…

Late last night (here in Australia) RED digital cinema announced a new bread of cameras – DSMC (Digital Stills and Motion Camera). If you’re in the industry you’ll be as excited as I am, if you’re not let me try and explain… It’s both a high end still camera (think SLR) AND a motion camera (think super high end above HD quality video – HD is 1K these start at 3K and will go up to 28K…that’s a 268MP image!!). The whole system is modular – meaning you can build your own camera system based on your needs; and this drastically reduces upgrading costs as you can upgrade individual components as you need to instead of having to buy a whole new camera body. Oh and they also have interchangeable lens mounts for Canon, Nikon, PL and RED mount.

The future has almost arrived – they’re estimating shipping by mid to late 2009. I’m dreaming of the possibilities for Christian media!

Why I’m a Canon shooter.

Really, really, really sweet news today! Canon announced the successor to the 5D – the 5DmkII.

Key Features are:
35mm full-frame CMOS sensor with 21.1 megapixels
Live View movies in Full High Definition (industry first)
Live View shooting (AF mode: Quick, Live, Live Face Detection)
DiG!C 4 Image Processor
ISO speed range 100-6400 (expandable to 50-25600) (Canon first)
3.9 frames per second (fps) with continuous shooting up to 78 shots in a single burst
Newly designed, high-performance viewfinder (viewfinder coverage 98%)
3-inch, fine detail LCD monitor (920,000 dots, VGA)

This last year Nikon have been coming out with some really sweet SLR cameras…and even though I’m a loyal Canon shooter (have too much invested in gear to make it worthwhile switching), to be honest I’ve been checking out Nikons offerings in the pro arena with interest. Now Canon have hotted things up – the 5DmkII is cheaper than the Nikon D700, with more megapixels and from the sample videos I’ve seen is going to be impressive with it’s HD video capture (there’s a external mic jack!!!).

It looks like my main SLR is going to be retired to backup and the backup sold to make way for a 5DmkII – I’m digging this! :p

New Apple keyboard

I bought myself a new external keyboard for my 17″ MacBook Pro – it’s definitely different compared to the old Apple keyboards, but after using it for a day I’m liking it. I’d say in use it’s between the MacBook Pro keyboard and the MacBook with a slight hint from the old Apple keyboard. One big advantage I see with the new design is that it won’t show the dirt as much as the old keyboard – my old one always needed to be cleaned out if I didn’t want it to look tacky.

Now I’m just waiting for a Griffin Elevator – which I should get this week sometime.

Camera Gear

I’ve got some new camera gear – and a SLR camera…is a nice upgrade from my Canon G5 (which I’m keeping at the moment as a backup)

Canon 70-200 f4.0L USM

New MacBook Pro!

I’ve finially got a MacBook Pro and am portable again! After having a Power Mac G5 with a 20″ Apple Cinema Display for the last year it’s great to have a laptop – and one that’s powerful enough as well. I sold my Power Mac to help pay for the MBP, though I’ve kept my 20″ ACD. The funny thing is that I’ve only had it for a few weeks and yesterday Apple updated the MacBook Pros with the Core 2 Duo CPU, bigger HDD, 3GB Max RAM and Firewire 800 – which I’m kinda anoyed about, as I use FW800. Anyway, I won’t be upgrading for a little while yet ;)

Oh, by the way, that’s my studio setup too.
